Ex Libris
- The Strain, by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan. I'm only 141 pages in, and I'm highly recommending it. Vampires are back, and they do NOT sparkle. It feels like 'Dracula' crossed with the latest techno-thriller. Plus, one of the characters is names Abraham. Know your roots, that's all I'm sayin'.
- Percy Jackson & The Olympians, by Rick Riordan. God knows, I spend plenty of time reading kids' books. What can I say? They've gotten a lot better since I was the intended audience. This is a fun series, where the half-blood son of a god learns there's more out there than getting kicked out of school. It's a pretty neat, modern take on the greek gods, while at the same time telling a very classical hero's story. The characters are good fun and, though written from Percy's perspective, quite a fun read. Also, gonna be a movie.
- Dust and Shadow, by Lyndsay Faye. One of many Sherlock Holmes/Jack the Ripper crossovers out there (slashfic, heh), but one of the most enjoyable. It's written in a style very reminiscent of Conan Doyle's, but is still easy to take in and enjoy (not always easy, having read some of these others). The story is very engaging and true to the characters, plus puts forth a theory I've not heard before. Very enjoyable.
- The Spellman Files, by Lisa Lutz. I don't even know how to describe this, other than, if you think your family is strange, check out the Spellmans. A funny cross between chick lit and detective noir. No really, it's funny.
- 20th Century Ghosts, by Joe Hill. An absolutely stunning collection of short stories, mostly considered horror, but truly transcends the genre. A must-read for any fan of horror, or short fiction.
- The Dead Travel Fast, by Eric Nuzum. A very funny, very informative book that looks at the cultural history of the vampire. Written by a "regular guy" it's a very clever and astute outsider's view of the (pop) culture of the vampire. Sci-fi and comic con goers prepare to be insulted.
